President Bush signs Bill designating $859,714 for WCH Emergency Department
|
Wetzel County Hospital's Emergency Room expansion project was
signed by President Bush. The $859,714 appropriation was
included at the reqeust of U.S. Senator Robert G. Byrd, D-W.Va.
Byrd, who serves as chairman of the Senate Appropriations
Committee.
"Emergency care has changed dramatically. In order to effectively
deal with the complicated cases that enter the Emergency Room, the
hospital must have the most effective tools and equipment to ensure
up-to-date emergency health care," Byrd said in announcing the
funding.
Final planning will now begin on the project with construction
expected to start later in 2008.
PACS Brings Speed, Efficiency and Savings
|
Wetzel County Hospital has installed and is now operating Agfa
HealthCare’s Picture Archive Communication System (PACS),
IMPAX TM 6.0, to help address the needs of the hospital’s
expanding radiology department. The move, which was finalized
in mid-February, will help tie together various imaging systems
within the facility, giving the hospital the most efficient way to handle
the community’s radiology needs.
PACS enables electronic viewing, transmitting and storage of
diagnostic images such as Computer Tomography (CT) scans,
ultrasounds, X-rays, and magnetic resonance images (MRIs) via
computer. Physicians locally and around the world can share
radiology images via password protected secured access over the
Internet and patients will receive their images on a compact disk
(CD) instead of actual films if they need to take them to another
hospital or physician.
New Toshiba CT Scanner in Operation
|
Wetzel County Hospital's new Toshiba Aquilion™ 32 – an
advanced computed tomography (CT) system is now in operation.
The system can quickly scan any region of the body for injury in just
seconds, providing the essential information needed to evaluate
patients that present to the ER with possible internal injuries. In most
U.S. hospitals, it is estimated that CT scanning accounts for more
than 10 percent of diagnostic radiology examinations.
In addition to fast CT scans, Wetzel County Hospital expects to
significantly increase its exam capacity – which means more patients
can receive the treatment they need faster and be referred to
surgery or discharged from the hospital. In an emergency room
setting, when every second counts, the Aquilion 32 scanner will
allow physicians to quickly identify injuries to the internal organs and
make a confident diagnosis.
